The Wartburg rises over the town Eisenach at the north-western end of the Thuringian Forest.
The castle was founded 1067 by Count Ludwig der Springer. It is possible to determine architectural styles from the Romanesque to the Gothic, Renaissance and Historicism. A special attraction is the Luther Room (''Lutherstube''), where Luther translated the New Testament into German in only a few weeks. In 1817 the first Wartburg festival was celebrated here and the minstrel's contest (Sängerkrieg) took place at the Wartburg in the 13th century. In 1999 the Wartburg received the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site as symbol of the grand periods of German history.
